Born on Easter Sunday, April 13, 1941, native Texan and lifelong Houston resident, Everett Lyn Ramsey, the artist known as “RAMZ”, started painting late in life in 1991 at the tender age of fifty after a visit to the Museum of Modern Art in Palm Beach, Florida featuring Mark Rothko. On returning to Houston, while eating dinner at a local restaurant that encourages local artists to display their art, he related his experience to the restauranteur. She had just received a cancellation from one of the artists, so she asked RAMZ if he wanted the chance to show his work. RAMZ jumped at the chance, of course. So without ever having held a paint brush, much less ever having an art lesson, RAMZ went to an art store the next day, bought some paints, brushes, and 18 canvases, and headed off to his garage to begin his adventure in painting. Two weeks later, the owner of the restaurant sent out invitations for a cocktail reception to 300 of her regular patrons showing the new artist’s, RAMZ, initial collection. After the reception 16 of the 18 were sold and RAMZ happily exclaimed, "I am an Artist!" and, as they say, "the rest is history.”
As the featured artist in Houston's Brun Street Gallery from 1998 to 2008, RAMZ’s work has been purchased and displayed in numerous Houston homes and offices, many of them being commissioned pieces for specific locations and private collections coast to coast. Using subject matter like book titles, Broadway plays, operas and ballets, as well as, common everyday happenings, RAMZ combines his lust for life and "interruptions of the moment" into vibrant translations of acrylics, mix media and unique application techniques to create fun and refreshing paintings that are truly "works of art."
